PRE (Proyecto Remedios Educativos) Non-Profit Corporation is an organization working in the rural southwest region of Nicaragua to elevate the quality of local education. PRE has actively worked in the area since 2009, specifically in the municipality of Tola, conversing with communities and facilitating the participation of local parents, teachers and concerned citizens to volunteer their time for the repair of their old schools and construction of new schools.
PRE works on the basis that promoting local Nicaraguan volunteers will encourage a sense of ownership by the citizens, and cultivate a more conscious concern for their schools in the future. Countless other benefits to working with local volunteers include the opportunity for them to learn new skills, saving money on materials and the advantage of local know-how to determine how to best succeed with these projects.
PRE’s budget is directed entirely towards its projects in Nicaragua. There it pays for the help of two professional contractors for the construction of new schools and a supervisor of projects who is also an assistant to director/founder Espen Haugen. A very small amount is put towards marketing in the United States and the rest all goes towards PRE’s schools. Since officially beginning its work in 2009, PRE has only spent approximately $38,000 (USD).

In addition to repairing existing schools PRE is excited to have been able to purchase a textbook curriculum for all of its primary and secondary schools, providing class guides for the teachers in every subject and creating a ratio of at least one book for every four students. Additional schools that PRE has most recently worked with will receive their books this year.
Beyond books and repairs PRE has distributed donor-given sporting equipment and supplies to its schools as well as laptops and printers to the administrative offices of its largest schools.
PRE has currently helped a total of 16 schools, with at least five more on deck to receive help in the immediate future. Of the 16 schools that have received help two are completely new schools built from the ground up by PRE and local communities.

The one-classroom school in Berlin has been a test of endurance. It is now being finished up with only small, superficial details waiting to be completed. The school is so remote that no motorized transport was able to be used and countless oxcart loads have had to bring materials to the site. There was even a brick oven constructed near the site so that at least brick material would not have to be transported.
In December ground was broken in San Luis for a larger two-classroom school that luckily sits alongside a road, allowing it to have been constructed quickly. The school will be serving children from the entire surrounding area, many who have never been able to attend any type of classes before.
PRE continues to work in and around the southwest region of Nicaragua, focusing on helping to bring quality education to those communities most in need of it. PRE is making plans to continue to help its previously assisted schools into the future while following its model of local ownership.
